Rose has become an alcoholic by the time Peter arrives at the ranch for the summer, which she conceals from George. She takes a drink of alcohol as they leave, something she had previously opposed. She is unable to play more than a few notes and is humiliated further when Phil, who is still filthy, enters and belittles her. Rose is hesitant to play the piano due to her lack of ability, but George and their guests put pressure on her to do so.
